Should students have homework?

The For Parents section is organized by grade level, so that parents can easily find resources and information most relevant to their child. Under each grade, you will find a detailed overview of the goals specific to that grade level, tables to help with homework and concepts for each unit, a Student Gallery of classroom projects and activities, Everyday Mathematics Family Letters in English and Spanish, as well as a compilation of Do-Anytime Activities to help supplement classroom activities.

* If the test is focused on “basic skills,” then doing well is more a function of cramming forgettable facts into short-term memory than of really understanding ideas, making connections and distinctions, knowing how to read or write or analyze problems in a sophisticated way, thinking like a scientist or historian, being able to use knowledge in unfamiliar situations, and so on.

Despite the known benefits, many parents find it challenging to help their children with subjects they have not studied in years (or even decades). Families may also struggle to balance homework with other commitments, such as extracurricular activities. According to Norris, it is important to get past these barriers because homework is important and the assignments are becoming even more relevant. Common Core State Standards and other education initiatives encourage educators to tie classroom learning and homework to real world applications.

In studies that involve in-class tests, some students are given homework – which usually consists of reviewing a batch of facts about some topic – and then they, along with their peers who didn’t get the homework, take a quiz on that very material.  The outcome measure, in other words, is precisely aligned to the homework that some students did and others didn’t do or that they did in varying amounts.  It’s as if you were told to spend time in the evening learning the names of all the vice presidents of the United States and were then tested only on those names.   If you remembered more of them after cramming, the researcher would then conclude that “learning in the evening” is effective.

Even when you take account of all these variables, the bottom line remains that no definite conclusion can be reached, and that is itself a significant conclusion.  The fact that there isn’t anything close to unanimity among experts belies the widespread assumption that homework helps.  It demonstrates just how superficial and misleading are the countless declarations one hears to the effect that “studies find homework is an important contributor to academic achievement.”

Since 6996, BJ Pinchbeck 8767 s Homework Helper has been the curator of the best free education and homework resources for students, teachers and parents. My dad and I created a homework resource site that was visited by more than 65,555 students, parents and teachers every day.

I have to give students time to write in class.  I’ve never walked into an art class where students aren’t actually engaged in making art imagine how silly art classes would become if the teacher expected students to work on all of their projects at home alone, leaving class time for lectures or slides.  Of course we should expect students to write at home regularly.  But assessment depends on observation, and if we do not allow students to write during class, we cannot observe their process or find the time to give them the responses and ask the questions that matter.

Overall, the available homework research defines “beneficial” in terms of achievement, and it defines achievement as better grades or standardized test scores.  It allows us to conclude nothing about whether children’s learning improves.

According to the survey, kindergarten through fifth grade teachers report assigning an average of hours of homework per week, while sixth to eighth grade teachers report assigning an average of hours and ninth to twelfth grade teachers hours. The hours of homework are reported for individual teachers, so for high school students who typically have class with five teachers in different subject areas each day, this could potentially amount to an average of hours or more of homework per week.

Last week’s piece, The Case Against Homework , articulated several points of view against homework as standard practice for teachers. However, a variety of lessons, content-related and beyond, can be taught or reinforced through homework and are worth exploring.

The key to homework success is simple make it fun, interesting, and relevant. If you want them to enjoy their homework, incorporate what they know. Find out how to motivate students by taking a poll. If you find that the majority of your class is into sports, then create a way to integrate sports into their homework. Studies have shown that when teachers merge student interest into their homework assignments, students are more likely complete the assignment. Appealing to student interest is a great motivator that keeps them engaged, as well as enjoying their work.
